New Recording TODO (11/2017)

I just listened to each of the songs-in-progress to see where we are. Below are my thoughts/notes. Yay, progress! :-)
-Mark

  • Got A New Groove
  • Bacharach
    • OVERALL: We're close.
    • Spine…Piano?: Needs Deep Low-end steady spine (Wump-Whump-Whump) during verses (Piano? Bass?)
  • The La La La Song
    • OVERALL: We're pretty close on this one.
    • Main vocals - seem okay, with some rough bits. Might want to re-do in place or in whole?
    • Backing vocals -Beth/Karen/Chuck - need to do. Some fun ideas come to mind…
    • keyboards - okay
    • Backing vocals/Andy - done
  • Chord Progression
    • Spine…Percussion?: Needs Deep Low-end steady spine Woosh-Woosh-Woosh (different from Bacharach - percussion? Vocal? sample?)
    • Needs a layer of Andy (guitar? Sax? Something else?)
    • Uke? Banjo?
  • Freakalicious
    • OVERALL: I think we're just about done here, except the editing/mixing!! Hadn't heard the keyboards, but I LOVE them! Especially the solo! Yiyza! Hooray!
    • Editing Note: Not sure about the experimental intro… I urge dropping it and just starting the song.
    • Chewing Gum in Signapore
    • OVERALL: I think we're done on this.
  • Sell Your Guitar
    • OVERALL: I think we're done on this.
  • She's So Elliptical
    • OVERALL: I think we're done on this.
    • Mixing note: In the very first 2 bars before vocals kick in, can we crank up the guitar a lot more, then back it off to present levels once vocals kick in? (Alternatively, maybe we add a 2nd guitar doing the same chords, for a bigger, growlier effect?)
  • Ulysses
    • OVERALL: I think we're done on this.
    • Mixing note: Add some (not overwhelmning) vocal effect on choruses to give it more punch? Slapback delay? Something else?
    • Mixing note: I love the way the tracks have been layered and build at the ending…

Sketches Of New Tunes

When we were at the Spooner’s for the Sept long weekend, we did take some recording “notes” for 6 new possible tunes. Here is a youtube playlist with the 6 song sketches:

How about we pick 2 or 3 of these and setup a recording session to finalize song outline, add lyrics if needed and create a click track (with initial drums if practical/possible)? I’ll start the voting:

  • Song1 - No Gallbladder
  • Song2 - Hey Shout (Seems like a really fun start for a live song)
  • Song4 - Pat Metheny-ish (Andy had the idea that this song would be a great vessel for a sermon — It would be cool to have a studio sermon-song)

(old) Recording TODO

  • Back Off Bacharach
    • Beth & Karen Vocal
    • Rachel Keyboards
    • Mark: Trumpet
  • Elliptical:
    • Swirly sound at end (slide whistles? Keyboard? According? Something…)
    • Beth & Karen Vocal
    • Rachel Keyboards
  • The La La La Song
    • Mark: Vocals? (Clean up?)
    • Beth & Karen Vocal
    • Rachel Keyboards
    • Andy do-do-do vocal
  • Sell Your Guitar
    • Andy vocals
    • Beth & Karen Vocal (Beth has done some backing tracks)
    • Rachel Keyboards
  • Ulysses
    • Beth & Karen Vocal
    • Banjo (over chorus)
    • Mark sparse double-track: heon the CIVIL WAR but in the end he DIED POOR

5 - Song Notes

SHE’S SO ELLIPTICAL

  • Ukulele <— Probably the next instrument to record
  • Bass: Craig, whatja think about standup bass with bow doing singsong stuff? Could be so, so cool! Whatja think?

ULYSSES

  • Electric guitars — I'm thinking rockin'
  • Keyboard – Funky 70s, maybe? What do you think, Rachel?
  • Lots of backing vocal harmonies ("having fuuuuun… happy! Happy! HAAAAAPEEEEE….!)
  • Trumpet

WONDERFUL LIFE (Or whatever it ends up being called)

  • Beth vocals: I suggest double tracking — it'll sound great :-)
  • Some cool keyboard — piano-ish? Something more unusual/cool?
  • Electric Guitar (Chuck?/Andy) — not sure exactly what here… Ideas??
  • Multiple voices in background: "Round and around" …, and other stuff.)
  • Horns?

CHEWING GUM IN SINGAPORE

  • Straight-ahead rocker
  • Asian instrument solos (whatever that means)
  • Lots of Harmonies
